Uniden DECT-3080-3 Cordless Phone Review

I’ve been using this set for about six months already. I hope that my experience with product may help others decide whether this is the set worth buying or they should be looking elsewhere. So far, the phones operated as expected and they gave me no trouble. We have a total of six phones in the house but, I suspect that these three are the ones we’re using close to 100% of the time now.

The set is expandable to 6 handsets per base (that would be the answering machine) but each handset could, in fact, be registered to up to 4 different bases which would make everything extremely complicated if it was actually done.

I ended up with the Uniden DECT set after a sad experience with ‘brand X’ or, shall we call it ‘brand V’? Their (more expensive) offering was so bad, I had no choice but to return it so, I’m using the Uniden now and I am happy with it.

For efficiency sake, I will start with the negatives so that anyone who cares about these (lack of) features can quickly decide that this set is not for you. Here they are, the negatives:

- The speaker volume is low. This is true for both the phones and the answering machine/base. This probably has some advantages when it comes to battery life (see below) but anyone who must have a loud speaker should be warned that these phones’ speakers are anything BUT loud.
- The ring volume is also low. Seriously, anyone who has a hearing problem should NOT buy this set. I do not mind the low ring volume because too loud rings bother me but I am listing this as a negative because some could mind.
- The intercom can NOT use the speaker. It’s the earpiece only for the intercom.
- Only the numeric keypad lights up when the phone rings. Some of the essential buttons: the on, off, phonebook, caller ID are not lit and that makes using the phone in the dark somewhat difficult.

The features that made me decide that this is the set for me include:

+ Long battery life. Possibly because of the low-volume, these phones seem to last forever on a charge. The manufacturer claims up to 10 hours of talk time. I’m not sure if that’s the case but, so far, rarely see the ‘low battery’ warning yet and I am spending many hours, almost every day, on conference calls.
+ Good reception. With the base in the basement, I was able to use the phone, outside, in the backyard and in the driveway which I cannot do with my great Motorola 5.8 MHz sets.
+ Great design. These phones and the base are actually pretty in an unobtrusive, minimalistic way. They are a little on the small and light side but they can hold their own in a room full of gadgets.
+ Easy access to voice mail from the handsets. The handset keys actually have the remote-like symbols for play/stop/fast-forward, etc. so, if anyone does not feel like reading the menu options from the phone’s display, you can simply use it as if you were using a remote. Very nice.
+ Belt clip – my wife loves this more than I do because I tend to be at my desk when I talk on the phone.
+ Headset jacks on all handsets – another feature that my wife loves.
+ 50 page, VERY thorough manual that was written by an English-speaker. This may sound like a trivial thing but I was actually impressed by how easy to use and how comprehensive the manual was. Every feature appears to be covered.
+ Easy to navigate, simple menus
+ Privacy mode – once on a call, you can block all other registered sets to listen on your conversation.

Other features, which I expect in any phone in this class and are well implemented include:

= Caller ID
= Call waiting
= 3-way calling
= 70 phonebook entries per set with the ability to copy individual entries or the entire phonebook from one set to another (I tried it and it was very easy)
= The ability to personalize each phonebook entry to show name (can keep the caller ID name if you don’t want to complicate your life), wallpaper, ring style and display style (can’t see myself doing that a lot)
= 30 caller ID number per set, in addition to the phonebook entries
= 5 ‘last dialed’ numbers availalble to redial
= 10 ring tones (in fact 5 rings and 5 melodic tones)
= 10 display styles
= 5 wallpaper styles
= English/Spanish menus
= Independent volume controls for headset, speaker and ringer.
= The ability to set the time/date on all sets and base from one handset.
= The ability to control the answering machine, including turning it off from any handset.
= Intercom.
= Paging a lost handset from the base.

I am overall VERY happy with these phones but I must take off one star, mostly for the ‘dark’ buttons and the ‘low volume’ issue. Other than that, they come as close to ‘perfect’ as anything. This is, by far, the best multiple phones set I’ve had… ever.

Just in case anyone cares to know what DECT is about.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a relatively new (2005) standard for cordless phones, initially developed in Europe.

Corded and Dect 6.0 Combo Phon Review

First, I want to say that I love this phone (set). It just works, feels good in the hand and by the ear and doesn’t weigh 5 pounds.

Some people have made good reviews already of this phone set but there were a couple things I thought to add or suggest.

The corded phone w/ answering system and speaker phone – for me, has too short of a cord. I bought a long black one @ Radio Shack which works better. The corded phone does indeed ring and take/send calls when there is a power outage. We had a big storm and the power went out and sure enough, it was the only phone that rang (a call to see if we were alright . The speakerphone works about ‘average’ – my older Panasonic (and much more expensive) speakerphone performs much better. But for use on my desk, the Motorola is sufficient for a speakerphone. I like the style of these phones, they look smartly constructed (but not heavy).

One thing to note on the ANSWERING MACHINE – if you do have a power outage or even some kind of interruption on your phone line, then go and check if the answering machine reset to not recording messages. I found this to be the case. For example, I have DSL internet here and the tech. guy upgraded my TV/cable signal (thru phone line) and though no power went out or anything, the action still turned the answering system off. The little ‘new message icon’ is a bit small (another reviewer stated this with some ferocity) BUT if you do have new messages, it will state this in words on the panel saying like, “2 new messages”. So no worries there. I did find it easy to listen to the messages from the cordless phone which is a nice feature. I like the feel of the keypad. OH, and this is a bonus – the answering machine voice is a FEMALE, so I used that instead of recording my own. (finally!) All the other phones I’ve had in the past had male voices, so this was nice as I’m a woman and don’t always want my own voice on the recording. That was a pleasant surprise, not a biggie, but a plus.

The cordless phone is lightweight, has good reception about what most phones have, performs without any problems. There is not a clip on the back of the phone (like many of my other cordless phones have had) and I confess I miss that. But it’s not a big deal. I just got used to sliding the phone (with a clip) on to my pants/trousers, whatever, when I wanted to be hands-free but needed to carry the phone with me (like outside). The footprint of the cordless phone in the charger is small which is great. Doesn’t take up much room at all. The battery seems to last a long time, I haven’t worn it out yet and I’ve had some long phone calls and left it off the charger. So the battery life is good. Better than average.

Four and a half stars for the less important notes I left here otherwise it’s a complete winner for me. 50 bucks is an excellent value, really for all you get. I had an AT&T similar setup and didn’t like it. It was only several months old. The older Panasonic cordless phone/anwering/speaker phone I still have, (was real expensive in the day), but I have that in the kitchen because the speakerphone is superb. I can walk to the pantry and can still talk and be heard. amazing. (they don’t make ‘em like they used to). But I digress..

This Motorola combo phone set was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a corded phone that would work in power outages, had an answering machine and speaker phone, looks nice, and is easy to use on my desk. The cordless has good clear reception, long battery life, easy to use and feels good in the hand (which is a big deal) and I use that everywhere else.

I added a few pics for your review so you can see what the phone(s) look like when not appearing like an advertising graphic. Also, the color of the screen when it lights up is not so yellow gold as in the ad photos, so I took a pic of that. It’s more yellow orange, in case you’d like to know.

I highly recommend this phone set if what you’re looking for is anything like what I found.

Motorola DECT Cordless Handset for the L3xx and L4xx Series, Black (L4) Review

I bought this phone to replace an office phone at a Ranger station. The requirements were, a corded base with answering machine, and at least 2 cordless handsets with an operational distance of at least 200 feet. One handset was to be placed in a residence and the other to be placed in a workshop, all areas that distance prevented me from running phone lines to.

Pros: This phone looks nice on the desk in the office and is slim and sleek. It has a lot of features that are useful such as playing messages from the handsets, the ability to use the handsets and base station as an intercom system. The volume and sound clarity is excellent and can be adjusted. The speaker is better than most speaker phones I’ve used and you can actually hear and be heard with the speakerphone on the handset. Zero interference with my wi-fi network, which was one of the main reasons for going with the DECT 6.0 system, so I can actually use the internet and talk on the phone at the same time without any problems. The answering machine is easy to use and the controls are a cinch. By far the best feature of the phone and something I couldn’t find out by reading other reviews in the working distance you can go with the handsets away from the base station without dropping a signal…. I got over 300 feet before the signal started to fade then eventually dropped. Pretty much 300 feet was way past my desired operational range so I’m pretty happy. The base station works without power, which is key with my job.

Cons: The handsets need a better shape to allow easier use. It’s like holding 1×2 6 inches long up to your ear, you can’t hold it up with your shoulder (you know everyone does that when they need hands free, however you can buy a headset). The buttons need more feedback when you use them. The base station buttons feel awkward, would be nice to have actual separate buttons without the rubbery feel. It’s kind of like using a sheet of bubble wrap to dial with.

Overall: I am pleased with this product and have been using it for over a month now. It fulfilled every need I had and came with some great features. I would recommend this product to anyone… Motorola has a great reputation for innovation and design and they have delivered.

Uniden DECT 6.0 Black Cordless Telephone System with Interference Free Digital Technology (DECT3080-3) Review

I’ve been polling friends and co-workers for weeks, and finally settled here. Have to say that one month in, I’m very happy.

Pros
Stylish looking, with a little chrome action
Lightweight
Sound quality is good/great
Belt clips came in the box
Head-set jack. This was most important to me, and I was shocked at how few higher-end phones had it
Battery lasts well (all day con-calls)

Cons
Odd button configuration on bottom row, takes some getting used to
Screen switches off and requires first button press to re-activate the phone (again, just takes some getting used to)

I have not yet tested the range, nor really used the address book. I wish I could just sync with my Notes, or my cell. That would be a cool addition.

Overall, I would recommend this phone to others. I work all day at home on the phone using a Panasonic headset, and I’m very happy with the call quality.

Panasonic Dect 6.0 Dark Grey Cordless Phone with Answering Machine (KX-TG6433M) Review

I bought the KX-TG6433M after comparing it to many other 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz and DECT 6.0 phones. So many of the others seem to have a significant number of owners that complain of various problems in the reviews on Amazon. This phone had much lower percentage of bad reviews and that made me decide to give it a try.

This phone replaced several different 900 MHz spread spectrum phones that I was reluctant to give up because they worked well and didn’t interfere with anything else in my house, like WiFi. But they used heavy, expensive NiCd batteries that are becoming hard to find and I decided it was time switch to newer technology.

Things I like about the KX-TG6433M.

+ The range is better than I expected. I have used the phones outside up to 250 feet from the house. At that range, there is a little static, but the sound quality is acceptable. This is about the same range I got with my 900 MHz phones. Inside the house, I have no trouble at all. The base unit is located on the first floor at one end of the house and I have no trouble using the phones in the basement or on the second floor, even at the far end of the house from the base unit.

+ The phones use inexpensive AA NiMH rechargeable batteries. I know I will never have trouble finding replacements.

+ The handset sound is good. My hearing isn’t the greatest and I have trouble with the low volume level on some phones. The Panasonic is adequate for me. One of my 900 MHz phones could go a bit louder, but the other two were not as loud as KX-TG6433M.

+ The menus are relatively easy to use. My old phones could store up to 19 phone numbers and let you dial any one with just 3 key presses. The menu system on this phone takes a bit longer to get to a stored number. But it can store more numbers, so that’s a trade off I’m willing to accept. And I can store the names of people with each number – something my old phones couldn’t do.

About the only improvement I could wish for is a better quality speaker phone. The speaker in the handset is tiny, so it can’t provide room filling sound way a real speaker phone can. People on the other end can definitely can tell that you have them on speaker phone. Your voice just doesn’t come through as well when you aren’t talking directly into the mic. This is not a major complaint in my book – just a wish for an improvement the next time around.
